Newgrange Winter Solstice

This is a record of the winter Solstice at Newgrange in County Meath , Ireland in 2004. This was one of the best in recent years with perfect skies for the occasion.

The great feat of building the monument is surpassed by it's design to align itself with the sunrise of the winter solstice. This happens every year on the 21st December. On a clear morning like today we watched as the sun rose over the horizon and sent a shaft of sunlight through the 'Box' to light up the center of the burial chamber.
This morning was perfect. What a wonderful feeling as we gathered in the early morning frost watching and hoping that the sky would be clear.

Newgrange Sunrise We were rewarded with one of the best in years. As the sunrose the small crowd waiting outside cheered and clapped. Earlier someone had been beating a bodhran, an ancient gaelic drum. This helped create an ancient atmosphere. As a mark of respect to the sun he stopped playing as the sun rose over the horizon.

Newgrange Sunrise The small crowd outside Newgrange Co. Meath appreciate the morning splendour that we have just witnessed.
A view looking from inside the passage grave out towards the entrance. The top box is clearly visible and it is here that the sunlight shines through. The lower box is where visitors walk through into the passage grave, as you can see it is very narrow and you have to walk in single file. Also on the right hand side you can see some artwork on the stones.
The Central chamber is lit up by the shaft of sunlight. This image is lit by artificial light - just for display purposes.
This image shows the spiral decoration carved into the stone at the in the back recess.
